Eventful History

The Winery Cobenzl looks back on an eventful history rich in tradition. Already in the 13th century, wine was pressed on the Latisberg (better known as Cobenzl). In 1774, the property was transferred to Johann Philipp Count Cobenzl (hence the name of the winery). The count had a marvellous castle built with beautiful parks, temples, and pavilions, where the Viennese court often celebrated their glittering festivities. After Count Cobenzl, the castle and the adjacent parks often changed hands until the city of Vienna acquired the Cobenzl property in 1907. In the course of the years, the plant has been transformed into a winery.

Winery Today

In 1988, Mr. Thomas Podsednik was engaged to build up the vineyard and intensively enhance quality improvement. Thanks to long-term, sustainable planning and a constant focus set on quality, the team has managed to establish the Winery Cobenzl as one of the top vineyards of Vienna.

The emphasis is on traditional Viennese varietals, associated with state-of-the-art, gentle wine technologies. Around 3/4 of the wines are white wines such as the "Grüner Veltliner", "Riesling", "Pinot Blanc" and the "Wiener Gemischte Satz" (mixed composition). Among the red wines, the most prominent ones are the "Zweigelt" and the "Pinot Noir".

The Winery Cobenzl cultivates app. 60 hectares vineyards in Grinzing, on Nussberg and on Bisamberg. The unique microclimate and the closeness of the Danube River are ideal preconditions for delicately fruity, mineral wines. Thanks to the Bisamberg's warm, dry southern exposure and loose, sandy soil, Burgundy varietals rich in finesse flourish here particularly well.
